Monitoring energy flows of the Fraunhofer ISE Campus

Identify potential savings and gain a better overview

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg, or Fraunhofer ISE for short, is the largest solar research organisation in Europe with around 1,400 employees. The researchers use the mondas® data platform to gain a better overview of the energy flows in their research buildings and identify hidden savings potential.

Around 4,000 data points are recorded and analysed by the data platform. They come from heat and cooling generators, heating and cooling circuits and heating and cooling networks, but also from ventilation systems and a large number of distributed sensors and actuators on the ISE campus.

In addition to energy flows, material flows such as the consumption of water and technical gases are also recorded. The system uses this data to calculate around 1,000 values that map the energy flows at the respective locations and across the entire ISE campus.

The monitoring platform, realised as an on-premise solution, offers facility management a very clear presentation of consumption values.

The Fraunhofer ISE campus consists of a large number of different buildings spread across the campus site and connected to the central mondas® data platform (© Fraunhofer ISE).

Indications of potential savings

The first indications of potential savings emerged as soon as the meters were connected and the mandatory plausibility checks were carried out. For example, time programmes for night-time reductions or weekend switch-offs were checked and readjusted.

Fraunhofer ISE employees also have access to the platform in order to mobilise potential savings through changes in user behaviour. After logging in, they can monitor and track energy, water and gas consumption at their specific location. If user behaviour changes, they can immediately see the effect on the platform.

Deep analyses also possible

With the mondas® data platform, more in-depth data evaluations and analyses are also possible. Weather data, detailed load profiles or utility bills can be integrated and used to identify further savings potential.

In the meantime, the building technology team is already planning appropriate meters as standard for new buildings, which are then connected to the data platform. This allows functional or installation errors, for example, to be recognised during building commissioning - and rectified at an early stage.

Use in everyday research

The mondas® data platform is not only used by facility management, but also by researchers on the Fraunhofer ISE campus. They use individual data analyses to investigate the behaviour of refrigeration systems or electric charging stations under different operating conditions, for example. mondas® supports them in their scientific work.
